The Temperate House

( See the featured image – The Temperate House at Kew, which reopened in 2018 after a five-year restoration project. The Grade I listed building was designed by Decimus Burton and engineer Richard Turner. It was originally opened in 1863. )
It is hoped that a member of the staff of Donald Insell Associates, the restoration consultants, will give us a guided tour. The restoration was accomplished through combined funding of £41 million from the Government, Heritage Lottery, philanthropic organisations and Kew donors.

The Palm House

The day will continue with a visit to the famous Palm House (1844-48) (below) also by Burton (with Nicole Burton) and Richard Turner.

Marianne North Gallery

The trip will include a visit to the Marianne North Gallery of Botanical Illustrations. Marianne was born in Hastings in 1830, daughter of Frederick North, a Liberal MP for the constituency for several periods between 1831 and 1869
Marianne travelled extensively overseas, especially in remote areas, making hundreds of botanical drawings and paintings of great accuracy and beauty.
